King Sombra by Suirano King Sombra by Suirano
Finally got to coloring this. I wanted to try more digital painting in an attempt to get better at it. I have seen some great work so here is me practicing lol. Anyway, King Sombra, picture came out pretty good in terms of doing things differently. The good thing about having a dual monitor computer is that the two monitors are different resolutions allowing me to get a good resolution for the picture for most viewers to see it well, especially with all this black lol.

Anyway, enjoy. Also, any good tips on digital painting is much appreciated.

* * Please don't give me comments on how much you dislike Sombra, I seriously, really do not care in any way, shape or form. * *

King Sombra is really just like Mephiles the Dark

1.) They're both the darkest villain in their series
2.) They have a physical form (pony or hedgehog) and a shadow form
3.) They're both killed by a Princess (though Cadance alongside an entire Empire)
4.) They both appeared in the part of the series that nopony liked. (Season 3 of MLP and Sonic the Hedgehog 2006)'

And what does Mephiles's transformed state look like? Crrrystalssssss...

Another thing: Did his death remind anypony of the destruction of that giant stone pegasus in Anastasia during Rasputin's death scene? (Interesting to note because one is an evil pegasus and the other is an evil unicorn)

Also watch Guardians of the Galaxy and tell me a certain scene near the end doesn't remind you of him

I don't know why but the way he's positioned and glaring reminds of of Shadow from Sonic... hmmm

I found him really interesting. He seems like somepony who were driven mad by a lust for power, to the point that his whole person became bestial and instinctual.

I like to think he wasn't really a pony at all. More like some kind of anthropomorphic personification (or ponification) of dark magic not unlike the kind of magic that, according to Lauren Faust, took hold of Princess Luna through her jealousy and became Nightmare Moon. Instead of possessing a pony, he perhaps achieved his kingly, pony-like form after becoming imbued in the crystals of the arctic north and absorbing the Crystal Ponies' (supposedly) empirical culture. That'd explain his obsession with "Cryssstalllsssss..."; he IS one.

Where he came from, we still don't know. But we don't know where the magic that corrupted Princess Luna came from either, assuming it's from an outside source as reasoned by Faust. His role of a tyrant is a mere mockery of what he truly is: a wayward force of pure, unadulterated evil whose very nature is to spread fear and despair.

That's my headcanon and I'm sticking to it.

He could be like Mephiles the Dark. Maybe he took pony form through a unicorn's shadow, like how Mephiles took hedgehog form through Shadow's shadow

Sombra was a human? :iconlolwatplz:

We all have evil inside of us. Luna's transformation to Nightmare Moon was an internal source as stated in the first two-parter. Her bitterness and jealousy took a hold of her. Her strong magic combined with it and she became Nightmare Moon. Celestia couldn't wield the elements properly as she was never their true owner, much less on her own. The elements allowed her power to seal away her sister in the moon for a thousand years when the true owners would arise.

King Sombra was jealous of Celestia and Luna's immortality. He tried coaxing Starswirl the Bearded into revealing the secret but failed. Sombra turned to dark arts and his hatred and jealousy mixed with the forbidden arts he hoped to uncover, but found he needed an inordinate amount of crystals to do so. He enslaved his kingdom and forced them to mine and harvest all day long. The more crystals he gained, the more power he got, but the more power he got, the more warped his mind became. Celestia had no choice, no elements and no sister. She did what she could, but in her weakened state, Sombra was allowed just enough respite to curse the Crystal Empire.

There you have my head canon :3

The episodes never suggested that Nightmare Moon was anything more than Luna corrupted by her bitterness, but Lauren Faust has hinted at an outside force and at Nightmare Moon being the embodiment of her bitterness manifested with dark magic to possess her by saying "Luna was no longer present, jealousy buried her inside Nightmare Moon".

Is that explicitly stated? Dukes. Ah well, only a minor mistake that can be easily rectified! How about this:

The evil that was overtaking Luna interfered with the elements. The two sisters were unable to fully harness the power and had to make do with what little they had. They were, after all, quite powerful in themselves.

Personally, I think King Sombra was the best two-parter villain so far. :) Discord, Chrysalis, and Nightmare Moon are pretty high up there too, though...heck, I like them all. Why isn't it easy to choose just one? D:

Well with the way he was described, he was pretty powerful. In fact, I think Discord is the only one who surpasses him in power in my opinion.

Why would people start commenting on how much they _dislike_ a character on someone's _fanart_... How rude is that _

I came here to say it's AWESOME, I like the pose and the nice contrasts between the black shadows and his silver armor :3

People have their opinions which they are free to express but since this is my page, I am free to ignore it lol.
I like Sombra, I thought he was pretty cool, would have something aside from that cape/robe thing he wears though.

Now I know why he looks like a bad OC. He has too many colors. If he didn't have the red horn and purple eyes I bet he'd look better.

*shrugs* I like the design. It isn't holy balls epic but I think I can tolerate it because of everything else about him. Plus he only has 4 different colors: grey/black ( since black isn't technically a color =/). green, red, and purple.

Well that's just what I think causes a lot of people to not like it. It's something I just noticed. A lot of bad oc designs tend to have a bunch of random colors that don't nessicarily fit the over all color scheme, expecially with colors that just jump out way too much from the others. Like a lot of the time I'll find myself being more drawn to his horn than the rest of him.

But that's just what I think might help with him and why he's so off putting to people.

I think people are put of more by how cliche everything was. People didn't like much of him when just a picture came, it is no surprise why screen time was so minimal. I know the whole green and purple was just when he was using magic and stuff. But to each their own.
